Donald Danforth Plant Science Center
The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center has a full-time, exempt Payroll Accountant position available in the accounting department, reporting to the Controller. The position is hybrid, allowing for both in office and remote work. The Payroll Accountant is responsible for processing and managing the payroll function for the organization, ensuring accurate and timely payments to employees while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The position will also assist with monthly close and preparation of balance sheet account reconciliations. This role requires a strong understanding of payroll systems, tax regulations, and accounting principles.
Responsibilities:
Process bi-weekly payroll for all employees, ensuring accurate calculation of wages, deductions, and overtime
Maintain and update employee payroll records, including new hires, terminations, and changes in status
Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll, deductions, benefits, and related matters
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws and regulations, including tax withholding and reporting requirements
Prepare and submit payroll reports, including tax filings, employee earning statements, and any other documentation
Prepare and submit effort reports, ensuring accurate allocation of salaries to respective projects
Manage payroll systems and software, ensuring they are up-to-date and functioning properly
Assist in audits related to payroll and provide necessary documentation as required
Provide training and support to staff regarding payroll procedures and software
Reconcile payroll accounts and resolve discrepancies, ensuring payroll transactions are accurately reflected in financial statements

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Understanding of federal, state, and local payroll laws, tax regulations, and compliance requirements
Familiarity with tax treatment of non-resident and resident aliens, including withholding requirements, tax treaties, FICA exemptions, 1042 forms, and other payroll considerations
Experience with multi-state tax filings
Attention to detail when calculating payroll and ensuring accuracy in all transactions
Effective prioritization to meet payroll deadlines and manage multiple tasks
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive employee information
Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with employees and management
Willingness to learn new systems and adapt to changing regulations
Collaborate with people & culture and finance teams effectively
Familiarity with general accounting practices and principles

Qualifications:
Minimum of three (3) years of progressive payroll or related experience
Associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field is preferred, but comparable experience will be considered
Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) is a plus
