Job Title: Staff Accountant
Immediate Supervisor: Controller

General Description/Position Summary:
The Staff Accountant position advances the mission of the St. Louis Area Foodbank by providing accounting and finance support to its internal stakeholders. The Staff Accountant will significantly support the daily finance operations for general ledger activities. The Staff Accountant will assist the Controller in ensuring that appropriate systems and procedures are maintained to support effective program implementation. Responsibilities include participating in month-end close, accounts receivables, fixed assets, and other assigned projects. The Staff Accountant is responsible for ensuring that all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems comply with appropriate U.S. GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities:
- Oversee and ensure the efficient operation of the core duties listed below, making strategic recommendations for ongoing improvements, implementing tactical processes, enforcing policies, and monitoring internal controls.
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate U.S. GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Keep the Controller and Chief Financial Officer apprised of daily operations and communicate any problems or issues in a timely manner with proposed solutions.
- Prepare monthly journal entries and perform accounting functions related to month end closing, including but not limited to the following:
- Update and maintain Fixed Assets utilizing the organization’s Fixed Asset Program.
- Record monthly depreciation.
- Review and prepare Purchase Order (POR) accruals.
- Review and update Prepaid Schedule and prepare monthly journal entry.
- Assist with preparing monthly government billing, in compliance with government grants and federal regulations.
- Provide supporting documents for government grant reporting to department heads upon request.
- Record and reconcile income for donations and non-governmental grants and perform all accounting related functions.
- Collaborate with Partners and Programs for agency accounts receivables and update accounts accordingly.
- Perform bank account reconciliations.
- Perform general ledger account reconciliations and analyses.
- Maintain current Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for all core responsibilities.
- Cross Train with Accounting Coordinator to provide backup support as needed, including Accounts Payable, Bank Deposits, AR Monthly Billing.
- Cross Train with the Controller to provide back-up support.
- Perform other accounting duties as assigned.
Assist and/or provide support with the following accounting functions:
- Support payroll processing when requested.
- Review of departmental budget to actual variance analyses.
- Update cost allocations.
- Annual Fixed Asset Inventory.
- Preparation of the annual operating budgets, government grant budgets, reports for Grantee and Governmental agencies and other miscellaneous projects.
- External audit, including preparation of client prepared schedules, reconciliations, audit confirmations, and other required information.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university with an emphasis in Accounting.
- 5-8 years of progressive accounting experience required. Non-profit experience preferred.
- Passion for the Foodbank mission and the ability to demonstrate SLAFB’s Core Values: Stewardship, Teamwork, Agility and Respect.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel including V lookups, pivot tables, data, and quantitative analysis.
- Intermediate to advanced experience with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, Microsoft 365, and other web-based applications. Microsoft Dynamics experience and Ceres or the ability to learn required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to develop oneself through continuous learning, initiative, innovation, resourcefulness, and critical thinking.
- Ability to prioritize, effectively manage multiple projects concurrently, and take ownership of work.
- Ability to meet tight deadlines, work extended hours during accounting close, audit periods and other critical times.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to work at special events and/or other projects that may occur in the evenings or during weekends. Meeting attendance may require overnight travel.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of company information.
- Must be meticulous, but able to maintain a balanced perspective in rapidly changing business circumstances.
- Must be able to pass criminal background check and drug screening.
